At the
nursery of Herdade da Comporta we grow turf from many types of certified seeds,
adapted to different climatic and maintenance conditions, always with high
levels of quality. The
particular soil and climate conditions of Comporta allow us to quickly supply a
range of different turf types, at an excellent price, suitable for home lawns
and sports fields and presented in rolls for easy installation.
At our
nursery, an area more than 100 hectares of irrigation center-pivots gives us an excellent capacity to
respond to demand, from house gardens to public parks, from golf courses to
amateur football fields. The use of
turf rolls is the quickest and easiest way to get a bright, dense and resistant
lawn.The roots,
already formed on an very rich sandy soil, will find on the new garden an ideal
place to continue their growth, giving a soil cover and leaf resistance that a
traditional seeding would take longer to achieve.
Different
types of turf for different purposes
The turf
needed for a garden in the Northern region or in a Golf course in the Algarve
doesn’t have the same requirements, not are they exposed to the same weather
conditions. For that
reason the turf nursery of Herdade da Comporta produces different turf types,
as the most diverse realities of soil, climate, level of use or maintenance level.
Rustic (cool season)
The most popular turf due to its adaptability and tolerance to drought and trampling. It has a dark green colour, with good presentation throughout the year, even during very hot summers and cold winters.
80% Festuca arundinácea
20% Poa pratensis
Classic (cool season)
More sensitive turf, but with a faster growth. It needs more water and regular cutting. Shiny dark green. Good presentation throughout the year. Excellent for sports fields for its uniformity and to allow lower courts.
60% Festuca arundinácea
20% Lolium perene
20% Poa pratensis
Bermuda (warm season)
Very high density lawn, very resistant to drought and not very demanding in maintenance. It has its greatest development during the hottest months. During low soil temperatures it stops growing, turning yellow, but it regains its natural green when the soil temperatures rise.
